D B As one of the most-widely used languages in the world, English is thought to be much easier to leam than others. Now Limor Raviv, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute,is tryig to find why. Raviv designed an experimemt and asked groups of different sizes to create a new languge to describe different scenes. During the experiment, the"speakers" saw a scene on their screen and then typed in nonsense words to dexcribe it Then the "listener,"would guess it by selecting one of eight scenes on their own screen. The group could receive one point for every successful guess. Raviv discovered that group size affected the result The larger groups created languges with more systematic (系统的) grammars than the smaller ones, which mad it easier to guess the meanings of new words. She concluded from the experiment that the size of a community affets the development of a language. Other studies also show languages spoken in larger communities usually have more systematic grammatical structures. The reason is to solve the difficulty in communicating with more people that they are unfamiliar with. Then it will make the language simple."When there's more contact with strangers, the language wll become
easier.Languages developed by large communities enable strangers to immediately use their languages and understand each other" Raviv said. Although English might have a larger vocabulary, its grammatcal structure is relatively easy to follow. This is why the structure of English is quite simple when compared to many other languages. So today,English is widely spoken and over one billion people speak it as a second language.Afer all,it's relly easy to leam. 24. How did the "listeners"win the points in the experiment? A. By choosing the right scenes. B. By drawing the same shapes C. By speaking out the correct rules. D. By typing in the suitable words 25. What can we infer about the experiment result? A. All groups formed similar grammar systems B The smalle groups created more useful words C. Each group folowed the same grammar rules. D. The larger groups had more successful guesses 26. What makes English widely spoken according the text? A. A large vocabulary. B. Easy pronunciations C Simple grammars D. Regular communication 【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C C According to a 2010 report, up to 14 million tons of plastic from 192 nations went into the sea that year. That's more than twice the weight of the Pyramid of Khufu (胡夫金字塔). Plastics stay forever in landills, waterways and the oceans, and sea animals. An amount of (大量的) plastic is harmful to sea animals. Much plastic trash is washed up on the shore, which does harm to the environment. Angela Haseltine Pozzi didn't like seeing that on the beach near her home in Bandon. She wanted to call on her community to clean it up. So she started an organization called Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea. Since 2010, more than 10.000 vonlunteers have collected 21 tons of trush from Oregon's 482 kilometers of shoreline. Using plastic from the beach cleanup, Ms. Pozzi and her staff and many volunteers create sculptures of sea animals. Ms. Pozzi gives credit to everyone who helps. However little it is, their effort is highly thought of. Some people have picked up the plastic, and others have sorted the items by color. Still others have washed each piece of plastic trash. Ms. Pozzi is responsible for the detail work. More than 70 works of art have been created.
Four travelling exhibits have displayed the sculptures in more than 18 places. Most sculptures are about 19 feet tall and take from six months to a year to complete. One of the first is Henry the Giant Fish, a 15-foot-long fish made of used bottle caps, toys and lighters, which received a great honor. The Washed Ashore sculptures, hopefully, will make people aware of how so much plastic ends up in the oceans. Now, the Washed Ashore team is working on a sculpture of a dolphin, with plans for more sculptures. "Until we run out of plastic on the beach, the work will continue." Ms. Porzzi says.
