Harbin invites visitors to frozen world
Winter is approaching! Come to the Harbin in the northeast of China and enjoy
the Ice-Snow World! Here you can appreciate illuminated ice at night, and check out
snow in the daytime. This is a good place to toss water and watch it turn into ice
instantly. Find a safe place with no one nearby, and enjoy the unique sight. Moreover,
in winter, the Songhua River turns into “thousands of miles of ice” and becomes
a natural ice-skating rink. The frozen river offers opportunities for many different
winter activities. Wanna book a room? Call 0451-88456888.
Shennongjia’s real beauty is more than just a myth
Shennongjia is said to be the place where the Emperor Yan once lived and impresses
visitors with its vibrant ecology, rich biodiversity and the natural beauty of karst
landforms. There are waterfalls, pools and a 17-meter-high arch “bridge” crafted
by nature after years of rain erosion. You can hike in a forest, climb a mountain
and explore a large, dark cave to listen to the sounds of swallows nestling. Some
visitors hope that they may even encounter the legendary yeren (“wild man”) here
in Shenlongjia. The booking line is 07196548542 or send a email to
www.shenlongjiabooking.com.
Liu Chi Xiang—Narrow Alley, Broad Minds
An about 2-meter-wide alley, or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts floods
of visitors in East China’s Anhui province. It serves as enlightenment, inspiring
people to observe public morals and cherish harmony, especially in disputes and
conflicts. Tickets sell only at the entrance gate.
In the Qing Dynasty , Minister Zhang Ying received a letter asking for his final
judgement on a dispute between two families’ house boundary about a wall. Zhang
wrote a poem back saying, “Looking at the ten thousand mile-long Great Wall. Long
gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.” Eventually, both families decided to move
their wall about one meter back, which created the “alley” between the houses.

Natalie Doan, 14, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. Living
near the beach, Natalie can see the ocean and hear the wave from her house. “It’
s the ocean that makes Rockaway so special,” she says.
On October 29, 2012, that ocean turned fierce. That night, Hurricane Sandy
attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard. Fortunately, Natalie’
s family escaped to Brooklyn shortly before the city’s bridge closed.
When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in

All around her, people were suffering, especially the elderly. Natalie’s school
was so damaged that she had to temporarily attend a school in Brooklyn.
In the following few days, the men and women helping Rockaway recover inspired
Natalie. Volunteers came with carloads of donated clothing and toys. Neighbors

flights of stairs to deliver water and food to elderly people trapped in powerless
high-rise buildings.
“My mom tells me that I can’t control what happens to me,” Natalie says.

Natalie’s choice was to help. She created a website page matching survivors
in need with donors who wanted to help. Natalie posted introduction about a boy named
Patrick, who lost his baseball card collecting when his house burned down. Within
days, Patrick’s collection was replaced. In the coming months, her website page
helped lots of kids: Christopher, who received a new basketball; Charlie, who got

Two days after eight e-sports games were officially announced to be included

members, (Meiko, Jiejie, Scout, Viper and Flandre) earned its first League of Legends
World Championship title with a 3-2 win over South Korea in a tough battle on November
7th, immediately drawing cheers from people around the country. The topic “EDG wins”
had been viewed more than 2.63 billion times as of press on Sina Weibo, ranking the
top trending topic for a long time.
With the popularity of digital technology, new forms of cultural exchanges have
been appearing, of which e-sports are the most popular. Unlike texts and videos,
e-sports go beyond the barriers of language and are understandable around the world.
E-sports mostly appeal to those in their early 20s, as shown by the carnival(狂
欢) of college students. That in turn makes them a good bridge of communication
between young Chinese people and their counterparts(对应的人) around the world.
More importantly, the e-sports industry is sustainable in spreading Chinese
culture, as the large audiences mean huge commercial potential. In 2020 alone, the
sales revenue of the domestic e-sports industry exceeded 278.69 billion yuan, and
involved 280,000 enterprises, which in turn created over 10 million jobs. According
to a media report, nearly 95 percent of graduates from e-sports majors at the
Communication University of China in Nanjing, succeeded in finding a job after
graduation this year, with 62 percent of them devoted to the e-sports industry,
including video game clubs, game design companies and game competition operation

industry is expected to further prosper and continue spreading Chinese culture to

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural
environments—mostly for entertainment purposes—is fair and respectful? Zoo
officials say they are concerned about animals. However, Most zoos remain
“collection” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats .
Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far
from their natural homes. Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species,
but visitors leave zoos learning nothing meaningful about the animals’ natural
behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and
most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range.
The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take
care of the animals’ natural needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces,
with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results
in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A world-wide study of
zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages.
Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated
head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking
back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养
繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted
in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding
programs because they do not want people to worry about a species (物种) dying out.
In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough
competitions to name baby animals?
B. dangerous
D.
C. meaningful
B. often attack other animals
D. enjoy walking around
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and
put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should
support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
12. According to the author’s description, the animals’ life in zoos is ________.
A. unhappy
competitive
13. From the passage, we know that animals ________ in the state of zoochosis.
A. remain active as usual
C. behave strangely
14. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by _________.
A. giving examples of animals in the wild
B. pointing out the faults in what
zoos do
C. questioning the way animals live
natural habitats
15. The author try to convey that________ in the passage.
A. zoos fail in their attempt to save habitats
B. zoos are not worth the public support
C. zoos should treat animals as human beings
