Introduction In this guide, the following icons are used. This icon indicates that you should read the caution message that follows. This icon indicates that you should take note of the important information that follows. The Print Server Software is designed to increase productivity and efficiency by making it possible to quickly and easily establish appropriate parameters for print jobs, and by supporting a variety of printers and printer languages. As part of the Network Imaging System, this software for Sun Ultra 10, Ultra 30, or Ultra 60 workstations consists of a user interface that supports icons, windows, and menus. Together they provide the functionality to configure print queues to handle incoming print requests, the capability to manage those queues, and the ability to control print jobs within the queues. This guide contains information about installing and using Print Server Software and performing other system administrator duties. About the Network Imaging System The Network Imaging System allows Macintosh systems, Windows-compatible personal computers (PCs), and Sun workstations to print through a print server to control the flow of print jobs from client systems to these printers. The server system must be a Sun Ultra 10, Ultra 30, or Ultra 60 workstation, while client systems can be Macintosh systems, Windows-compatible PCs, or Sun workstations. Types of Users There are three types of users of Print Server Software: the client user, the operator user, and the root user. Client User A client user can access some Queue Management options and those features that do not change workstation or Print Server Software system files. Of the three user types, client users have access to the smallest set of Print Server Software functions. Operator User An operator user has access to all features that a client user can access, and also can modify print requests awaiting printing and change queue states. To specify an operator user, edit the system_admin_user file. This file is described in Appendix A “Configuring Database Files”. Root User A root user has access to all features that an operator user can access, and also can modify workstation and Print Server Software system files. The root user can add, delete, and modify printers and print queues as well as modify workstation files. The root user can access all of the Print Server Software functions. Release 4 Print Server User’s Guide v
Introduction Print Server Functions Print Server Software allows you to do the following: Define print queues to meet current printing needs For example, if many documents for three-hole binders are printed, a queue can be established to serve only three-hole-paper requests. If other documents are printed on blue paper and stapled, another queue can be established to serve only stapled-blue-paper requests. Monitor printing activity and take any necessary corrective action For example, if a three-hole-paper queue contains a large number of jobs, the printer operator can place three-hole paper in the printer and print only from the three-hole-paper queue. Additionally, if a blue-paper queue and a three-hole-paper queue of one printer are both receiving a large number of files, the operator user can prevent one of the queues from accepting new files so that new print requests are redirected to another printer. After files in that queue have been printed, the queue can be reset to accept files. Move or copy jobs between queues View job print options that cannot be modified Perform job backup Modify print options Print Client Functions Client system users print files through queues configured for the print server. Job print options can be chosen on the client system, and the jobs print through the client print server that best match those requirements. What’s in this Guide Section 1 “Installation and Startup”—installation instructions for Print Server Software. Section 2 “Device Configuration”—instructions for configuring Print Server Software. This chapter tells you how to check the software installation; add, modify, view, and delete devices; and change the AppleTalk version. Section 3 “Queue Configuration”—descriptions of print queues; instructions for adding, modifying, copying, viewing, ordering, and deleting print queues; and details about selecting queue job acceptance rules. Section 4 “Queue Management”—descriptions of how to enable and disable print queues, and how to set preferences for the Queue Management window. Section 5 “Job Management”—information about accessing the list of jobs within a print queue in order to reorder, delete, modify print options, or check the progress of jobs. This chapter also explains how to move jobs between queues, and set the preferences for the Job Management window. Section 6 “Backup and Restore Utility”—information about using the Backup and Restore Utility. Section 7 “UNIX lpr Command”—information about using the UNIX lpr command. Appendix A “Configuring Database Files”—information about configuring and updating database files. Appendix B “Automatic Removal of Jobs from Archive Queues”—information about editing the crontab file. Appendix C “Communications Diagnostic Utilities”—information about diagnosing communications problems. vi Print Server User’s Guide Release 4
