Introduction In this guide, the following icons are used. This icon indicates that you should read the caution message that follows. This icon indicates that you should take note of the important information that follows. The Network Imaging System Print Client Software allows you to print files from your Sun Solaris system as part of a network printing system. The software captures user input, builds a print request, and transfers that print request either directly to a specified printer or to a print server. The print server handles the print request, resulting in the printing of the document. Input can be received through a graphical user interface (GUI) or a command line interface. You determine what documents are to be printed and how they should be processed by printers and finishing devices. Once a specified printer is selected you then select from a list of printing, paper, and page options, such as stapling, paper type, and copy count. Print options may be saved for future use. Features Available features vary depending on the selected printer. Following is a list of printing features. Not all features are available on every printer. Two-sided printing Multiple set collating Stapling Printing pages on different paper stock Offset stacking Inserting separator sheets Using transparencies Booklet printing Folding Accent color Interfaces Graphical User Interface The GUI for Print Client Software allows you to provide the input necessary for the print client to build print requests. It also provides you with some convenient functions, such as the ability to store and load saved print options and define paper types. Command Line Interface The command line interface allows you to provide input to the Print Client Software application and create print requests without executing the GUI. You can invoke the Print Client Software from the UNIX command line or UNIX scripts. Release 4 Print Client User’s Guide v
Introduction When you use the command line to input to the print client, a document file and a print options file are specified. The print options file is stored by the GUI and may be referenced in a command line when you invoke Print Client Software. Optional arguments can override some of the selections in the print options file (for example, number of copies, server, or print device). A print options file may be created using an ASCII text editor. However, the preferred method for creating print options files is through the GUI. For more information about command line interface input, refer to Appendix A “Command Line Interface”. vi Print Client User’s Guide Release 4
