Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times. Twelve women
have won the Nobel Prize for science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some
women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised
large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England, Mary Anning became one of the first women
recognised for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth. Mary and her
father collected fossils in their village on the south coast of Great Britain.
Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions
of years.
When she was only twelve years old, Mary became the first person to find the
almost complete skeletons of several animals that no longer existed on earth. She
didn’t become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her
fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891, a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska travelled to Paris to study
physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She
began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre Curie
got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize for
physics in 1903 along with another scientist. Marie Curie became the first person
to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time for chemistry. Marie Curie
was one of the few women at the time who became famous as a scientist.

Over the next 20 years, we are going to send more and better robots to Mars.
Those robots will send back better pictures, maps, samples, and weather reports.
There is a limit to what robots can tell us, though, so eventually we will have to
send people to study the planet. Before people can visit Mars, we need to invent
a spaceship that can take us there. Mars is very far away. Depending on where Mars
and Earth are in their orbits (轨道) around the sun, it could take between six months
to a year to get there.
The moon is much closer, and we were there, 25 years ago. Over the next 10 years,
we are going to work on building a new spacecraft that can go to the moon. Using
this craft, we will practise the skills we need to go to Mars.
Once we get to the moon, we are going to build a station so that people can live
and work on the moon for months at a time. This is important so that we have a place
to start from when we want to visit Mars, but it is also important because it gives
us practice with living away from Earth.
By the time you are old enough to be an astronaut, we will have people spending
months on the moon. By the time you are old enough to be a commander of a space mission
we will be taking trips to Mars. By the time your kids are old enough to be astronauts,
we may have people living on Mars. Wouldn’t it be cool to get a postcard from someone
who was building a house on Mars? Wouldn’t it be cooler if it was you who sent the
postcard?
4. We eventually have to send people to Mars because_________.
A. the pictures that robots have sent back are not very clear
B. robots can’t tell us all we want to know
C. robots are controlled by us humans
D. the samples robots have sent back are not good enough
5. From the first paragraph we can see the distance between Earth and Mars________ .
A. is not always the same
B. is nearly the same
C. is unchangeable
D. never changes very much
6. A space station on the moon is important because________ .
A. people can learn to adapt to living on other planets
B. people can practise planting crops in it
C. the new spacecraft can only land in it
D. astronauts can practise skills they need to go to Mars
7. The author of the passage________.
A. thinks that trips to the moon are an unrealistic dream
B. encourages kids to be astronauts
C. hopes to receive a postcard from Mars
D. is sure people’s dream of living on Mars will come true

Terry Evanshen was one of Canadian football’s greatest receivers. He played
every down (进攻) as if it was his last. Though he had made great achievements, Terry’
s memories of his playing days have been completely lost.
It was in the summer of 1988 after he retired from playing that his career in
sales was taking off. One day in July, Terry, on his way home from work, had a terrible
car accident. He was knocked unconscious, and within minutes he was rushed to the
nearby hospital.
Three weeks later, he woke up. However, it became obvious that Terry’s injuries
were far more serious than whatever damage had been done to his body. A lifetime
of memories had been completely wiped clean. He had been all but reduced to the level
of a baby; everything from his ability to talk and walk to his understanding of what
it meant to be a husband and a father was all gone.
At age 44, Terry Evanshen would be starting all over again. Luckily he had the
support of his family, helped by small victories and a renewed bond between him and
his three daughters like when they taught him how to play football again.
In 1992, his recovery really began to pick up steam. It has taken years to rebuild
.
his shattered (破碎的) life, but today, more than 20 years since his playing days,
Terry is a popular public speaker. He tells his story of perseverance (坚持不懈)
and courage. “Never forget, we’re all in this game of life together. We will get
to the finishing line, one day at a time, one moment at a time, but celebrate the
journey. Seize today, because yesterday is gone and is never coming back.” As the
subject of the most watched Canadian movie of 2005, TheManWhoLostHimself, Evanshen
says his family has been his most important treasure. He refuses to be a victim,
saying he is a survivor.

The situation of the world’s plants is not good. One fifth of the kinds of plants
are in danger of disappearing, according to a report.
“Plants are very vital to human beings,” said Kathy Willis, who led the new
report. “Plants provide us with everything—food, fuel, and medicine, and they are
very important for our climate controlling. Without plants we would not be here.”
The good news is that deforestation rates around the world have dropped largely
since the 1950s. However, this report on the health of plants around the world shows
that there is much more to be done.
The report predicts that there are now 390,900 kinds of plants. And about 21
percent of those plants are in danger of disappearing. “The good side is that we’
re still discovering lots of new plants, about 2,000 each year,” said Dr. Willis.
“The bad side is that we’ve seen a huge change in land cover, mainly caused by
cultural activity, with a little bit of climate change in there as well.”
Human activity has a great effect on the danger of plants disappearing. As humans
cut down forests to make room for agriculture, towns and cities, biodiversity is
lost. This could not only affect our own food supply directly, but also affect the
food web.
12. What does the underlined word “vital” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Useless.
Important.
13. Which of the following does Dr. Willis agree with?
A. New plants are more than ever before.
disappear soon.
C. Many new plants are found every year.
produce medicine.
D. Plants mustn’t be used to
B. About half the plants will
B. Friendly.
C. Equal.
D.
B. There is a long way for us to go.
D. There will be nothing we can do.
14. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. We have made little progress.
C. We have achieved our goal.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Biodiversity Being Lost

I’m sorry to hear that you’re suffering from online game addiction. I completely
understand how you feel and I’m writing to help you with the problem.
Actually, long-time exposure to online games affects not only your academic
performance but also your health. I’d like to offer you some suggestions. First
of all, start some other hobbies, such as reading and working out regularly, which
will take your mind off the game and help you resist the temptation.
Besides, it is also a necessity to have a heart-to-heart conversation with your
parents.
I hope these ideas can help you get rid of your addiction as soon as possible.
Best wishes!

For many years, I had a recurring dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about,
trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you'll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished
business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books,
teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle
to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition. My hope
of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three
children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child,
had juvenile arthritis in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to
function in a normal classroom. I felt sorry for her and I didn't want her to live
her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That's the answer,”
I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her
up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment forms when the secretary said: “Mrs.
Schantz, why don't you come back to school?”
I laughed: “There's no way! I'm 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what
I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an
experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just
a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Itwasexcitingtogotoschoolagainbutit was no game. Sitting in a classroom
full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During
the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do. In the
evening, I was a hardworking student working on my courses. To my surprise, both
Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, and
my grades steadily improved.
Paragraph 2:
LindaandIsaweachotherthroughthetime. When I was down, Linda encouraged
me. “Mom, you can't quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have
to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave
up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted
for me to be class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished
business in my dreams was eventually finished.
