Tom Turcich of New Jersey became the 10th person to walk around the world. Over
seven years, he walked 48,000 kilometers across six continents and 38 countries
—most of it with his dog Savannah.
After a friend died in an accident at age 17, Turcich started to look at life
differently, and decided to go on a journey around the world. It took over eight
years of saving before Turcich finally left his home on April 2, 2015. About four
months into the journey. Turcich got Savannah from an animal shelter in Texas. She
joined him for the rest of the trip, becoming the first dog to walk around the world.
The pair walked around 30-40 kilometers a day, spending most nights camping.
Some parts could not be done on foot, however—such as when Turcich and Savannah
took a boat from Uruguay to Antarctica. In late 2017, Turcich also had to return
home to recover from an illness he got while traveling through Ireland and the UK.
He and Savannah started walking again in May 2018, going through Europe, North
Africa and Turkey before getting stuck in Azerbaijan for six months because of the
COVID-19.
Now that he’s back home. Turcich says he wants to stay in one place for a while
—and share his experience in a book.
1. What did Turcich do before his journey?
A. Camp with friends.
C. Join a tour group.
2. Why did Turcich stop his walk in 2017?
A. He became sick.
C. He needed more money.
3. What does Turcich plan to do next?
A. Go through Europe.
C. Feed more dogs.
B. Save some money.
D. Keep a pet dog.

Cynthia Rosenzweig was awarded the World Food Prize. She played a leading role
in modelling (建模) the effects of climate change on food production. As a climate
research scientist, she has spent much of the career explaining that global food
production adapts to a changing climate.
Cynthia, who describes herself as a climate scientist, grew up in a village near
New York, an area that led her to live in the country. She moved to Italy with her
husband-to-be in her 20s and developed an interest in agriculture. After returning
to the United States, she focused her education on agricultural science.
She worked as a graduate student at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in
the early 1980s, when global climate models were beginning to show the effects of
human related CO2 on the global climate. As the only team member studying agriculture,
she researched the effect on food production and has been working since then to answer
those questions. She completed the first experiment of how climate change will affect
food production in North America in 1985 and globally in 1994.
Cynthia has studied how farmers can deal with climate change and how agriculture
worsens the problem. For example, she wrote a research paper that said global
agri-food systems create nearly one-third of the total global greenhouse gases
caused by human activity. She added that greenhouse gases come from many parts of
food production, including the clearing of forests for farmland.
4. What helps Cynthia win the World Food Prize?
A. The great success in space research.
B. The important role in agricultural studies
C. The study of climate effects on food production
D. The scientific research on global climate change
5. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Cynthia?
A. The research information.
C. The family members.
6. Which of the following can best describe Cynthia?
A. Hard-working
Graceful
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Forests should make room for farmland.
B. Food production also affects climate change.
C. Farmers rely on climate for food production
D. Agriculture is the main source of greenhouse gas.

Math is a necessary skill that people use throughout their lives. Unfortunately,
many children and adults feel stressed and anxious when they have to do math. They
may be experiencing what is called “math anxiety”. Because of this, many people
believe that they are bad at math and don’t like math.
A recent research has shown that some children as young as 6 years old may feel
anxious about math. A team of researchers asked 154 children in grades 1 and 2
questions like “How do you feel when taking a big test in your math class?” The
children expressed how nervous they felt by pointing to a position on a scale (刻
度), where there were different faces from a very nervous face on the left to a calm
face on the right. After answering these questions, the children took a math test.
These researchers found that almost half of the children who participated in the
study said that they were at least somewhat nervous about doing math. Also, children
with higher math anxiety got worse scores on the math test.
Scientists have also found that math anxiety develops in children who experience
certain kinds of social situations that influence their thoughts or feelings. This
means that the child’s emotions, opinions, or behaviors are affected by things that
other people say or do. For example, teachers with high math anxiety were more likely
to have students with poorer math achievements at the end of the school year.
B. Stressful life.
D. Painful memory.
Good news is that researchers have found tools to help people with math anxiety.
These tools are called interventions ( 干 预 ). For example, researchers did an
intervention where they asked children with math anxiety to write about their
math-related worries. Then they found that children’s math test scores improved.
Therefore, it is advised to talk to classmates and teachers about math anxiety. This
is the first step toward helping to reduce the possibly harmful effects of math
anxiety.
8. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 1?
A. Math ability.
C. Math anxiety.
9. How did the researchers measure kids’ anxiety?
A. By making a math project.
B. By recording math scores.
C. By asking kids questions.
D. By showing teaching problems.
10. What can be learned from Paragraph 3?
A. Anxiety determines math ability.
B. One’s math anxiety can affect others.
C. Students are born with math anxiety.
D. Children should avoid social situations.
11. What is suggested for students with math anxiety?
A. Talking about it.

A recent study suggests that when it comes to the benefits of reading, just doing
it matters more than the content. Researchers have found that reading novels helps
the brain development in understanding others and imagining the world. They also
have found that people who spend a few hours per week reading books live longer than
those who don’t read.
But how to build a habit of reading? Like any habit, the trick is in figuring
out what suits you. The hardest part about reading is actually picking up a book.
You have to sit down, pick up a book and start reading. “I always have a book next
to wherever I put my phone,” My friend Jimmy once told me. “So if I want to check
my phone, I physically can see the book there. Nine times out of ten. I end up reading
the book instead of using my phone for nothing.”
Another challenge is time, and in that case, audiobooks(有声书) can be a good
choice. Audiobooks are great for filling the mind while you’re on the way to work,
washing dishes or working out at the gym.
If you’re still stuck on the way to developing a reading habit, the best way
is to revisit your old favorite books to get your youthful reading pleasure. You
should free yourself from the opinion that only important or educational books are
worth reading. There’s no shame in rereading the books that made you fall in love
with reading in the first place. Restarting the practice of reading is a little like
B. Finding a great book.
D. Getting reading started.
picking up painting. It takes some work to get into the best state, but once you
begin, the results are beautiful and satisfying.
12. What is the most difficult part in forming the reading habit?
A. Getting reading skills.
C. Having limited time.
13. What is the advantage of audiobooks according to the text?
A. They are time saving.
C. They aid brain development.
14. Why is rereading old favourite books a good idea?
A. It helps restart reading.
C. It improves the taste for art.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Method of killing free time
C. Way to choose educational books
habit

love for Chinese Calligraphy and Culture.
