Europe is the perfect place for a holiday. Every corner of the continent is
bursting with history, culture and sights. The countries are so very close to one
another, and yet so completely different.
Sweden
Sweden is a brilliant destination for a campervan (露营车) holiday, with
hundreds of well-appointed camping sites suitable for vehicles. Head north to
Lapland in the Arctic Circle and you’ll find true wildernesses where you can truly
get close to nature. Head here between June and mid-July and you’ll be able to take
in the midnight sunshine. If you’re looking for great nightlife, head to Gothenburg,
Stockholm or Malmo.
Germany
There are massive industrial cities, rolling plains, towering mountains, deep
forests and long, sparkling rivers. It’s not just what’s to see that makes Germany
so great, but the ease of seeing everything. All these wonderful locations are all
linked by one of the world’s best road systems.
Scotland
Scotland has something for everyone: cities with rich nightlife, incredible
scenery, wonderful lochs and medieval (中世纪的) castles. If you want to get away
from it all, then the Highlands are one of the least populated areas in the whole
of Europe. Hikers will love the Cairngorms – the largest national park in the UK.
Spain
Spain’s famous for its beach holidays, but it offers so much more than that.
With a lovely climate, rich history, excellent architecture, delicious cuisine and
friendly locals, Spain has long been a favoured destination for holiday.

Getting absorbed in a good story is a great way to relax. It’s good for your
health as well. But despite these benefits, does the way we consume a story make
any difference?
For some people, the only way to digest a good story is with a paper book. Being
in print, it’s possible to feel and even smell the book. And of course it’s very
portable. But the traditional book has had a rival in recent years from e-books,
which are read on e-readers or tablets. An “electronic” book enables you to store
hundreds of virtual books in one place and allows you to download books directly.
The e-book has become popular in schools, too, and according to one school in
London, it’s encouraged more children to read. 11-year-old Summit told the BBC:
“If you really want a book, you can just get it online. It’s so easy, and it’
s made me read more. I probably read every day now.”For adults, e-books are certainly
a lightweight way of accessing our favorite literature on the move.
The recent lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic have certainly given us
all time to read more, and in the UK at least, sales of physical books have risen
strongly. Last year, some 202 million paper books were sold, and the publishing
industry hopes this trend will continue now that people have got into the habit of
reading more.
But for those who can’t or don’t want to look at the text in a book, there
are audio books to listen to. According to Clare Thorpe, writing for the BBC Culture
website: “There are a large number of audio books. Some authors are even skipping
print and writing exclusive audio content.” No matter what your reading preference
is, there’s no doubt we have enough choices in how we access a good story.
24. What does the text mainly talk about?

As more people move into their golden years, many families are welcoming their
senior parents into their homes. While most seniors claim to prefer to age in their
own homes, safety and health concerns don’t always make this possible.
If you are preparing to welcome a senior parent into your home, everyone will
have an adjustment period. This type of move will have physical, emotional, and
mental influences for the whole family. Here’re a few tips to help you open your
heart and home to your senior parents.
You may be excited about having your senior parent move in, but that doesn’
t mean they will share your enthusiasm. Being asked to move out of their own home
can be very upsetting for your parents. So it’s important to be patient with them
and allow them the time to adjust to their new environment.
It’s also important to give your parents a space of their own. Before you decide
to bring a senior parent into your home, you need to consider if you have enough
space for them.
Then, for adult children, offering a senior parent a safe home is a priority.
Before moving, you will need to make some changes around your home to help your
parents stay safe. For example, install grab bars in the bathroom, repair all
stairways, add anti-slip mats to the kitchen and so on. And arm yourself with
knowledge like First Aid courses.
In addition, your senior parent will be used to being in charge of their own
home and is likely to feel like a bother as they begin to settle in your home. One
effective way is to assign them a household responsibility. Ask your parents to look
after the dog or cook a meal to make them feel like an active and important part
of the family.
28. Who may be the intended readers of the text?
A. People moving into their golden years.
B. People having senior parents to take care of.
C. People wanting to age in their own homes.
D. Senior people having safety and health concerns.
29. Which is the most important to move your senior parents home?
A. Being patient with your parents.
B. Giving them enough space.
C. Making sure of their safety.
D. Assigning them a household responsibility.
30. Why should you give your parents housework to do?
A. To make them feel like a bother.
B. To make them think themselves useful.
C. To make them in charge of the family.
D. To encourage them to exercise actively.
31. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Troubles to live with senior parents.
B. A good way to age for senior people.
C. Take your responsibility to adjust yourself.
D. Open your heart and home to your senior parents.

Food waste produced from the Clipper Cafe in Shaldon in the United Kingdom used
to be sent away to landfill, but they have found a new way to deal with it. This
machine breaks down the waste in less than 24 hours — reducing the volume by up
to 90% — producing a material that can be put back on the farm. The machine works
by using heat and enzymes to reduce the moisture content. It’s hoped it will help
the environment.
“Going to landfill is not sustainable. And it’s doing a huge amount of damage
to the environment. So, we are addressing this food waste on-site where it’s
produced,” said William Bedell, the machine provider. The farm and cafe are part
of the same business. Much of the produce for the cafe comes from the farm. And the
cafe is now sending back the leftovers. The process is quick, usually taking around
15 hours per load.
Peter French, the cafe and farm owner told the reporter, “It’s become noticeable
over the years how much material goes to waste — food waste in the kitchen
preparation and leftovers from table is full of nutrient that we really do need on
the farm to keep the soil healthy and productive for next year’s crops.”
B. Farm.
B. The machine.
“It just feels right to be returning that organic matter back to the land that
originally produced the food. The compost that comes out is a beautiful light, fluffy
material. We will be spreading this back on the land through the spring for this
year’s crops. And it’s hoped that that produce will end up back on plates in the
cafe soon,” said Peter French.
32. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The new way.
C. The food waste.
and enzymes.
33. Where does the food waste from the cafe go?
A. Landfill.
Machine factory.
34. Which best describes the new way to deal with the food waste?
A. Recycling.
Time-demanding.
35. What can we infer from what Peter French said?
A. The cafe and farm owner cares more about making money.
B. Food waste should be returned back to the land directly.
C. Kitchen preparation is the main source of food waste.
D. The technology of dealing with food waste has a bright future.

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world.
Similarly, music is a part of many people’s lives. ___36___ Here are some of their
similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of
letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading
this collection of letters on the paper and find meaning in it, musicians read notes
and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. ___37___ For example,
we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years
ago, which is really quite exciting.
Both vary with culture
___38___ In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the
world, which gives us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through
their music. This also means that there is something for everyone! Even if you don’
t like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.
Both share emotion
How do you know that I am angry? ___39___ Similarly, music can sound angry, sad
or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows
us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to
a happy song. ___40___
A. Different culture makes different music.
B. Both language and music play a huge role in our lives.
C. You can guess where someone is from by listening to their language.
D. By reading pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time.
E. In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling
down.
F. Of course, you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through
my words.
G. We have all used music to express our emotions, often combining it with language
in the form of song lyrics.

【答案】We all know an old saying concerning friendship, which is “A friend in need
is a friend indeed.” But there is another saying we should bear in mind —“Friends
are lost by calling often and calling seldom.” This saying tells a simple but easily
overlooked fact about friendship — there should be some social distances between
friends. Such a distance allows people to think seriously about what is going on
and how to improve this friendship. Once, I had a very close friend, with whom I
could tell all my secrets. And vice versa. We all took it for granted that this could
improve our relationship. However, with time going by, we found that we had nothing
to share and awkward silence appeared. After that, we agreed that we should keep
a certain social distance to find our relationship back. Now, we become good friends
again and our friendship is stronger than before.
第二节(满分 25 分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。
They say that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, but the briefest look
at books and the movies based on them would have anyone questioning this common saying.
All too often, great words end up being turned into cinematic “turkeys”.
Good movies need good stories. If so, why has one of the earliest and greatest
works in Western storytelling, Homer’s TheOdysey, never had an equally great movie
based on it? Movies need strong characters. So why have the movies based on The Great
Gatsby never been praised as “great”? Movies of course need impressive images,
so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies best described as
“interesting”?
One of the key reasons behind this is that while a book usually takes a few days
to read, a movie typically lasts under two hours. This means that great books can
lose plot details and characters when they move to the big screen. This is something
that even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can’t escape from, with fans
of the books disappointed not to see some of their favourite characters in the movie
version.
Movies also disappoint us when things don’t look the way we imagined them in
the books. Take, for example, the epic movie Troy, which is in part based on Homer’
s TheIliadand was met with mixed reviews from the audience. The most questionable
issue was the actress chosen to play the part of Helen. Many people thought she didn’
t live up to Helen’s title of “the most beautiful” woman in the world, influencing
opinions of the movie to some extent.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Furthermore, books
and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With
this in mind, perhaps we should judge a movie in its own right, and not against its
original source. Interestingly, audiences have in recent years turned to television
series such as SherlockorMadMen, which can have many characters and gradual plot
development. Perhaps, one day, readers of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most admired work
will find themselves glued to their screens by episodes of The Great Gatsby.
【答案】Good books with good stories, strong characters and impressive images may
be turned into bad movies. One reason is that movies can’t cover plot details and
characters written in the books due to time limit. Another is that we may feel
disappointed when things in the movies don’t look as what we imagined in the books.
After all, books and movies are different in forms. Therefore, we shouldn’t judge
