You may use your phone to remember some perfect moments in your life. But before
you do this, here's a(n)
26
finding that photo-takers need to know: Taking
photos is not the perfect memory-retention (记忆储存) tool you think it is.
27
, taking too many pictures could harm the brain ’s
28
to keep memories,
says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychological ( 心 理 学 的 ) science professor at the
University of California. So you may get the photo
29
kind of lose memory.
It works in two ways. Loftus explains: We
30
let go of the duty of
remembering moments when we take pictures of them, or we' re so distracted (使分
心) by the process of taking a photo that we miss the moment.
Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to
remember it at any time your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well
and good until that piece of paper goes missing.
But photo-takers don't need to
32
. Here are some tips on how to make taking
photos help—not harm—your memories. Take a few good pictures, then put down the
phone. If your goal is to remember a special trip or event,
33
the time with
your camera out is necessary.
Have someone else take the photos. Ask a friend or family member to take photos
for you at important events so you can
34
enjoy the activity.
Focus on details. If you focus on the details of a scene as you prepare to take
a photo, that process can help keep memories.
35
your photos regularly. Photos are a useful tool for memory keeping only
if we spend time looking through photos, but not every one can do that.

right next to me. Then Mrs. Ramirez said, “Becky, I know you’ll be a big help to
Sasha.” I smiled at Sasha, and she smiled back. Maybe we’ll become friends. It

I am really upset with Sasha. I'm not sure if I want to be her friend. I’ve

it away. When I walked into the classroom, I broke a rule —I kicked the ball indoors.
The ball knocked over a flower pot (盆). Since Mrs. Ramirez was still out in indoors.

In the cave, I saw gold coins in a corner. They were Flint's treasure! We had
come so far to find this. Already it had cost the lives of seventeen men from the
Hispaniola. And how many others? How many ships had gone to the bottom of the sea?
How many brave men had been killed for this? Perhaps no man alive could tell.
Next morning, we moved all the gold to the beach. Then we took it by boat to
the Hispaniola. It was a big job for so small a number of men.
Then at last, one sunny morning, we sailed out of North Inlet and towards the
nearest port (港口) in Spanish America. Before afternoon, Treasure Island had
disappeared from view, and I had never felt happier to leave a place behind.
The sun was going down when we sailed into the port, and the doctor and Mr.
Trelawney took me to the beach. When we came back, Ben Gunn was waiting for us
“Silver has gone,” he told us, “but not empty-handed. He’s taken one of the
bags of coins, perhaps worth three or four hundred guineas.”
I think we were all pleased to lose the bad man at so small a price.
We found some sailors for the ship at the port, and then had a good journey home.
Only five of the men who had sailed from Bristol with the Hispaniola returned with
her. We all took a large piece of the treasure. Some used it wisely, but some did
not.
Captain Smollett no longer goes to sea. Gray saved his money and now is a
half-owner and captain of a fine ship. Ben Gunn got a thousand pounds which he spent
or lost in three weeks, then he came begging and was given a job as a gatekeeper.
Of Silver we have heard no more. That scary seaman with one leg has gone out
of my life. I will never return to Treasure Island, but in my worst dreams I still
hear the sharp, high cries of Captain Flint the parrot, “Pieces of eight! Pieces
of eight!”
—— Adapted from Treasure Island
