Passage 4
If life treats you well, you can say, “I’m a happy person.” But, dare (敢)you
say, “I’m the happiest person?” Well, Alvin Wong can, because he was just found
to be the happiest man in the US.
Gallup, an American company, does a national survey in the US every year to see
who is happy and what makes them happy. The survey has many questions, such as, “How
many times do you laugh a day?” and “How much money do you think is enough for
a good life?” The results of the latest survey came out on June 16.
It showed that Hawaii is the happiest state in the US. It also found that older
people are happier than younger ones, and men are happier than women. Based on the
findings, the company has made a model of the happiest person in the US. It’s a
tall, Asian-American man, 65 or older. He lives in Hawaii, is married, has children,
is religious (有宗教信仰的), runs a business and makes more than $120,000 a year.
Alvin Wong, who lives in Hawaii, fitted the model. That’s why the 69-year-old
Chinese-American became the happiest American. Wong is a very active person. “I
get up in the morning and say, ‘I’m very lucky. I’m living in Hawaii, doing what
I want to do’.” he said. Wong runs his own business. He said he has some stress,
but he’s satisfied (满足的). “There are always hard times. I believe that if you
can’t laugh at yourself, life is going to be terrible for you… I’ve lived my whole
life with humor(幽默).”
