bring you to excellent views.

The Lime House here attracts thousands of visitors, but this is a pleasant walk
away from the crowds, through parkland, woods and up onto the hills. Popular with

Washington is home to lots of trees and lots of wood-burning stoves(火炉) too.
But what if you live there and can't cut wood or can't afford to pay anyone to do
it? Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, 21, are
happy to lend an ax(斧子).The three men cut truckloads of wood -then give the wood
to those in need.
The idea was put forward by Shane as a father-son bonding project. He wanted
to pass along the feeling his father Jackson and he shared while they cut wood, so
he and the twins spent the summer doing their deeds. The result was a great wall
of wood piled up around their house in Lake Stevens, about 35 miles outside of Seattle.
To buy that much would cost about $ 10,000.
It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned
cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted a request on a social
networkling site:”IF
YOU ARE IN NEED OF FIREWOOD AND CANNOT AFFORD IT, PLEASE PM [ personal message ]
ME…Please help me and my boys make sure NO ONE GOES COLD IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD."
The response was immediate. One man offered to donate a wood-burning stove.
Others raced over with more wood for the pile. Single dad Peter Ticer, 29, and his
four-year-old daughter depend on a wood-burning stove as their unique source of heat.
so it was a relief to receive a truckload of firewood from the McDaniels before the
holidays.”To get that much wood moved me to tears" he said.“So much stress and
anxiety off my shoulders. I couldn't be more thankful."
Giving is the reward. It has nothing to do with how well its received; it's about
how much it's needed.

Species of all types have evolved over the centuries to be just the right height
for their need.
So whether it's a giraffe or an elephant, these land animals stand just as tall
as they need to.
No other land mammal (哺乳动物) has quite the view like the giraffe. Standing
between 14 and 19 feet, giraffes are the tallest land mammal in the world. Their
height is an advantage.
Because of the height, their good eyesight and strong kicks, giraffes aren't
often brought down, even by lions. Still, giraffes face threats from humans for their
skin and meat.
The ostrich (鸵鸟), a large flightless bird, is among the most recognizable of
birds. Their long necks are matched by their long legs, and this gives them an average
height of 6.6 feet. With their legs, they can reach up t0 64km per hour. These birds
have a reputation for sticking their heads in the sand, but in fact, they're digging
holes to bury their eggs. From far away, it looks as if they're putting their heads
in the sand. Now, most of their living areas have been taken up by man, which has
greatly reduced their number.
Coming up behind the giraffe in the height competition is the African bush
elephant. They weigh about 6,100 kilograms — they're even more difficult to be
caught than giraffes. Lions try their best to catch younger elephants, but often
with little success. Still, the species is considered endangered due to the loss
of their homes.
Arabian camels are the tallest of the camel species. Males can reach about 6.6
feet. Despite their impressive size, Arabian camels disappear in the wild due to
man's illegal hunting.
8. Why do ostriches dig holes in the sand?
A. To build homes.
B. To cover their eggs.
C. To hide themselves.
D. To bury their heads.
9. Which land animals are the second highest?
A. Giraffes.
B. Ostriches.
C. African bush elephants.
D.
Arabian camels.
10. What might be a common threat to these animals?
A. Human activities.
B. Natural enemies.
C. Agricultural development.
D. Lack of living areas.
11. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A. The right height for wild animals.
B. Reasons for the height of
animals.
C. The strongest mammals in the world.
D. The tallest land animals on the
earth.

Being bored is no fun, especially at work. There's nothing worse than finding
yourself bored in your office on a Monday morning and realize there's still four
and a half more days to the weekend. But a new research done by Australian National
University argues that while boredom is certainly boring, it isn't all bad. This
bored mental state can actuaIJy spark(引发) precious creativity.
The study asked 52 subjects(实验对象) to do a boring job: Sort apart a bowl of
red and green beans with just one hand for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, 49 0ther
subjects-the control group-were instructed to create art projects with paper, beans,
and glue.
Once the 30 minutes was over, each group was asked to spend five minutes on a
creative task:they had to
come up with
reasons why a hypothetical(假设的)
person was two hours
late for a meeting. The researchers found that the bored group
came up with not just more ideas but more creative ideas than the control group.
The research found that although some previous research implies boredom can lead
to dissatisfaction at a job, boredom didn't produce unwanted emotions that could
be detrimental to mental health. In this case, people who were bored were just bored,
and they walked away with a net benefit of creativity.
“Boredom is not miserable and harmful based on my research," says the study's
lead author, Guihyun Park.“People want to get out of a boring state, so they are
induced to novelty-seeking(追求新奇的) unique thinking, which brings out
creativity."
12. What can we know about the 52 subjects?
A. They often felt very bored.
B. They always thought of weekends.
C. They were asked to do creative work.
D. They were required to sort
beans.
13. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. The bored group was as creative as the control group.
B. Bored people could work better than those who were not.
C. The two groups carried out a same 30-minute task.
D. Bored people are often late for a meeting.
14. What can the underlined word“detrimental” in Paragraph 4 probably be replaced
by?
A. Valuable.
B. effective.
C. Harmful.
D.
Positive.
15. What is the best title for the text?

Emotions
