each question there are four choices. Choose the best answer to each
question. Then blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:
All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to
be the lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what
the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one
of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!”
For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky
customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hoping. The cupboards in kitchen
were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to advise her against
buying things but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket
would approach her and say: “Madam, this is Your Lucky Day. Everything in your basket
is free.” One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken
it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She went back to
the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk. As she did so, she saw
the manager of the supermarket approach her. “Madam,” he said, holding out his
hand, “I want to congratulate you! You are our lucky customer and everything you
have in your basket is free!”

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:
A third of British people are overweight, states a report published in January
by the Royal College of Physicians, the result of an 18-month-long study. About 5%
of children weigh too much, and are likely to stay that way for life; in the
mid-twenties age group the proportion of fat people
rises to a third, and of the
middle-age population half are overweight.
Fat people risk severe health problems, says the report, including high blood
pressure, breathlessness, and various forms of heart disease. Smoking is
particularly risky for overweight people.
The safest way to lose weight is to eat cereals, bread, fruit and vegetables,
and cut down on fatty meats, butter and sweet foods. Current diets do far more harm
than good; slimming machines that vibrate muscles have not been proved useful; saunas
(蒸气浴) merely remove a little body water, and health farms, says the report, serve
as expensive holidays.
The report emphasizes that exercise is most important to health. Though it doesn’
t necessarily reduce weight, it maintains the correct proportion of body fat to body
muscle. And it isn’t only for the young. From middle age a minimum of 20 minutes
of gentle physical jerks should be practiced three times a week.
The report advocates several public health measures to combat the high prevalence
of overweight in this country. They include an increase of tax on alcohol to reduce
its increasing, and dangerously fattening consumption; and the provision of more
sports facilities by local authorities. Britain’s doctors, the report concludes,
must learn to be more sympathetic and specific in their advice to the overweight,
encouraging a change in eating habits on a long-term basis, and taking into account
the many—often complex—reasons why fat people are fat.
46. The passage is mainly about______.
A. why many British people are overweight
B. how to avoid getting overweight
C. British people’ s overweight problem
D. the relations between overweight and health
47. According to the report,a person is most likely to stay fat for the whole of
his life if he______.
A. gets fat in middle age
B. gets fat in his twenties
C. gets fat when he is a child
D. is born fat
48. The report thinks that exercise________.
A. is a way to reduce weight
C. can convert fat to muscle
B. is a sure way to keep one healthy
D. sometimes increases weight
49. The report points out that drinking too much alcohol________.
A. will also cause a person to get overweight
B. will cause a person to do less sports
C. will make a person forget the fact that he is fat
D. will lead a person to bad eating habits
50. The report suggests that when treating the overweight, doctors should______.
A. encourage a long-term diet for everyone
B. first consider why so many people are overweight
C. know that there are complex reasons why a person gets overweight
D. be more considerate and give detailed advice
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:
A scientist who does research in economic psychology and who wants to predict
the way in which consumers will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He
must obtain data both on the resources of consumers and on the motives that tend
to encourage or discourage money spending.
If an economist were asked which of the three groups borrow most—people with
rising incomes, stable incomes or declining incomes—he would probably answer those
with declining incomes. Actually, in the years 1947-1950, the answer was: people
with rising incomes. People with declining incomes were next and people with stable
incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional assumptions about earning
and spending are not always reliable. Another traditional assumption is that if
people who have money expect prices to go up, they will hasten to buy. If they expect
prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that
this is not always true. The expectations of price increases may not stimulate
buying.
The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America. Investigations
conducted at the same time in Great Britain, however, yielded results that were more
in agreement with traditional assumptions about saving and spending patterns. The
condition most favorable to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have
been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, they are likely to buy.
Thus, it appears that common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based
on correct understanding of consumer psychology.
51. According to the passage, if one wants to predict the way consumers will spend
their money, he should _______.
A. try to encourage or discourage consumers to spend money

C. declining

were ______ those of the investigations made at the same time in Great Britain.
A. not as good as
C. exactly the same as
B. much better than
D. somewhat different from
54. Which of the following statements is always TRUE according to surveys mentioned
in the passage_______?
A. Consumers will put off buying things if they expect prices to decrease.
B. Consumers will spend their money quickly if they expect prices to increase.
C. The price condition has an influence on consumer behavior.
D. Traditional assumptions about earning and spending are reliable.
55. From the results of the surveys, the writer of this article _______.
A. concludes that the saving and spending patterns in Great Britain are better
than
those in America
B. concludes that consumers always expect prices to remain stable
C. does not draw any conclusion

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:
Joe Bloggs worked in a large and famous company. The president of the company
believed in keeping his employees (雇员) happy. One year,he offered them a pension
(养老金) fund. The idea was that the workers would pay five percent of their wages
into a pension fund. The company would also pay a sum equal to five percent. When
an employee retired from the company,he could take with him all the money that he
and the company had put into his pension fund.
“I will open the pension fund, ”the president of the company said, “as soon
as you all agree to join. Unless you all join, I won’t open the fund. You’ve got
a week to make up your minds.
The idea was a very good one and everyone except Joe Bloggs agreed to join.
“I don’t understand it,” Bloggs said.
His co-workers tried to explain it to him, but he just kept saying, “I still
don’t understand it.”
Time passed and when there was only an hour left before the week was up, the
president sent for Joe Bloggs to come to his office on the 20th floor.
“Mr. Bloggs,” he said, “all the employees agree with what I am going to say
to you. So listen carefully.”
“It had better be good.”Bloggs said.
“Oh, it is,” the president said. “If you don’t agree to join the pension fund
before I finish counting to ten, the security guards will throw you out of the window.

Part IV. Reading Comprehension (Short Answer Questions) (10 points; 15 minutes)
Directions: This passage is followed by fivequestions or incomplete statements.
Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements
in the fewest possible words. Write your answers on Paper Two.
Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.
Imagine a classroom missing the one thing that has long been considered a
necessary part to reading and writing: paper. No notebooks, no textbooks, no test
paper. And there are no pencils or pens, which, after all, always seem to run out
of ink at the critical moment.
A “paperless classroom” is what more and more schools are trying to achieve.
Students don’t do any handwriting in this class. Instead, they use palm-sized (手
掌 大 小 的 ), or specially designed computers. The teacher downloads texts from
Internet libraries and sends them to every student’s personal computer.
Having computers also means that students can search the Web. They can look up
information on any subject they’re studying, from math to social science.
And exams can go online, too. At a school in Tennessee, U.S.A., students take
tests on their own computers. The teacher records the grades on the network for
everyone to see and then copies them into his or her own electronic grade book.
A paperless classroom is a big step towards reducing the waste of paper. The school
teacher, Stephanie Sorrell in Kentucky, U.S.A., said she used to give about 900
pieces of paper each week to the students. “Think about the money and trees we could
save with the computers, ”she said.
But, with all this technology, there’s always the risk that the machines will
break down. So, in case of a power failure or technical problem, paper textbooks
are still widely available for these hi-tech students.
61. Students use____________________________ instead of doing any handwriting
in a paperless classroom.
62. Texts for a paperless classroom are from____________________________.
63. When an exam goes online, the teacher will easily record the grades on the
network and then copy them into his or her own _________________________.
64. The last but one paragraph mainly tells us that ________________________can
be saved by the use of computers.
65. Paper textbooks are used in a paperless classroom if _____________________.
