Presenting the — A digital revolution in self-expression
Introducing the ist D from PENTAX. An SLR combining traditional PENTAX quality
and compatibility with the very latest digital technologies, it brings you the best of both
photographic genres and takes your creativity to a whole new level.
Enhanced creativity through
cutting-edge technology
Clear, comprehensive imaging with 6.1 effective
megapixels and a large-format CCD.
Superior functions for
SLR performance
11 selectable AF points,
with highlighting for greater assistance
With expansive 23.5 x 15.7mm dimensions, the CCD of
the istD achieves amazingly high definition, maximum
gradations, and reduced interference with the power of
6.1 large, effective megapixels. What’s more, such
performance is taken even further still with an image
processing circuit specifically designed to
enhance overall quality and
increase response time
for fast-disappearing
opportunities.
With an impressive 11 AF points covering a surprisingly
wide area, the ist D combines high-precision focusing
with step-ahead compositional freedom. Cross-type
sensors ensure accurate readings for each and every
point, while sets of points can be manually selected to
suit your subject and highlighted in red in the
viewfinder for greater assistance.

Work with quality you know
you can trust
The advantage of PENTAX lens compatibility
Your choice of lens is every bit as important as it is with
conventional photography. That’s why the istD has
been designed for compatibility with existing PENTAX
35mm lenses*. This allows you to achieve winning
shots with anything from a wide-angle lens to a super-
telephoto and imparts a sense of confidence that comes
from working with quality you can trust. The istD is
also compatible with high-
performance FA
lens es ,
allowing you to make use of
the same range of precision
autofocus features that have
made them so popular
in
conventional SLR photography.
And what’s more, the ist D
can even be used with our top-
of-the-line FA lenses too.
*All PENTAX FAJ lenses and lenses featuring
an “A” position are compatible with the ist D.
The exclusive ist D lens lineup
At PENTAX, we’ve already begun development of the
smc PENTAX DA series of portable, compact,
interchangeable lenses. Indeed the first of the series —
the smc PENTAX DA 16–45mm F4ED AL*(equivalent to
23.54 – 69mm in 35mm format) — is scheduled to
reach the market in the very near future.
*Tentative name
Note: Focal length equivalence in 35mm format can be determined by
multiplying that of a lens mounted on the ist D by 1.5.
16-segment multi-pattern metering
Advanced 16-segment multi-pattern metering lets you
take satisfying shots in even the most complex lighting
situations. The ist D also offers a choice of center-
weighted or spot metering, allowing you to give the
main subject more impact or capture all elements with
balanced exposure.
Hyper program mode offers auto exposure
and manual control
Hyper program mode combines the ease of auto
exposure with the versatility of manual control.
Beginning with program auto exposure, it automatically
puts you in Shutter-Priority AE should you turn the Tv
dial located at the front, or in Aperture-Priority AE if you
adjust the Av dial at the back. Whichever you choose,
the ist D responds with satisfying speed, and should
you wish to return to the original auto exposure
settings, all you have to do is push the green button.
Hyper Manual for greater control
over manual exposure
Hyper Manual mode assesses the optimum exposure
settings for your subject. You can then shoot with
totally automatic exposure, or press the AE lock button
to maintain that exact exposure automatically while
adjusting aperture or shutter speed as you please. Just
a press of the green button is all it takes to return you to
the default exposure settings.
The accuracy of digital auto bracketing
Exposure really can be a matter of personal taste. For
this reason, the istD offers auto bracketing. Allowing
you to take three shots of the same subject across a
preset range of exposures, it gives you the freedom to
select the one you like best.
Consecutive shots, multiple exposure, and so much more
The ist D offers so much shooting versatility. Selection
of high-speed consecutive shooting allows you to
record up to 6* frames at approximately 2.6 frames per
second. Multiple exposure allows you to take
experimental shots for creative results. There’s also a
self-timer, which offers a 12-second delay in normal
use, a 2-second delay through use of the Custom
Function, and even allows remote operation through
use of an optional unit.
* When the noise reduction function is switched off.
Electronic preview for depth-of-field confirmation
A handy preview lever exclusively developed for the istD
allows you to check depth of focus prior to shooting.
And because the lever is located conveniently close to
the shutter, you’re free to shoot practically as soon as
you achieve the depth you’re looking for.
A superior, specially designed glass pentaprism viewfinder
A key advantage of conventional SLR photography is
the avoidance of parallax error via through-the-lens
viewing. The istD, however, confers the same exact
advantage. Replacing the viewfinders found in film
cameras, it features a glass pentaprism viewfinder
specifically designed to
match the size of its
CCD and offers 0.95X
magnification and an
impressive 95% field of
view.
Built-in and external flash functionality
The ist D comes complete with a built-in flash that
broadens the scope of shooting. Featuring P-TTL
functionality, it pre-discharges to achieve greater
precision and offers a separate pre-discharge for “red-
eye” reduction.* There’s also a range of advanced
features that become available when the built-in flash is
used in combination with the AF360FGZ external auto
flash unit. These comprise quantitative control in
relation to built-in flash discharge, wireless operation,
trailing shutter sync, and high-speed sync.
* This feature does not eliminate “red eyes” in all instances.
Stainless steel chassis for increased rigidity,
minimal weight, and compact dimensions
Employing a chassis that’s only 1-1.2mm thick, the istD
has a truly lightweight design. Yet, thanks to the use of
low-temperature pressurized stainless steel reinforced
through reheating, it retains admirable torsional rigidity.
Additionally the space within the chassis has been used
in the most efficient manner possible, allowing ultra-
compact dimensions to be achieved without a sacrifice
in functionality.
A selection of image formats; a choice of sizes
Because digital photographers make different uses of their shots, the istD offers a choice of image recording qualities
and sizes. In addition to three different JPEG modes, it also offers the choice of non-compressed TIFF format — all of
which are available in small, medium, and large sizes. There’s even the option of RAW format too, which records all the
information available from the CCD.

A choice of power sources
With the istD, you have the freedom to choose the
source of power. Just select whichever you find most
convenient from the two included CR-V3 lithium
batteries, four AA batteries, or an optional AC adapter.
AA Ni-MH batteries can also be used, which can be
conveniently recharged.
A versatile grip that extends shooting life
The D-BG1 grip enhances versatility and
extends operation. Easily attached to the ist D
without removing the camera’s batteries, its
ergonomic design gives you a better grip. It
also houses four AA batteries that supply
additional power and features a shutter
release, Av/Tv dials,
a preview button, and an
AE lock — all ideally located
for vertical compositions.
Exclusive software*2 for RAW data
PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory is included on the istD’s
accompanying CD-ROM. This useful software makes
RAW data exceptionally easy to process and gives you
the freedom not only to specify image format and size,
but also to fine tune white balance, color tone, contrast,
color saturation, sharpness, and color balance.
*1,*2 System requirements
PCs running Windows Me/2000/XP (home and professional editions) with
a Pentium III CPU or higher, over 70MB of available hard disk capacity, and
a standard USB port.
Macintosh machines running Mac OS 9.0 or higher (CarbonLib 1.5 or
later), Mac OS X 10.1.3 or higher with a Power PC G3 CPU or higher, over
70MB of available hard disk capacity, and a standard USB. Compliance
with the aforementioned system requirements does not guarantee all
operations.
An impressive array of
digital shooting modes
A choice of auto, preset,
and manual settings for white balance
With the convenience of automatic white balance, the
istD assures pleasing color recording across a range
of different lighting circumstances. What’s more, it also
offers the ability to preset 8 types of light source, and
manual settings are also available — allowing you to
select the desired color temperature values for each
situation or memorize the color temperature values of
the conditions at hand.
Three-step control over sharpness, contrast, and intensity
In order to produce images that emphasize clarity,
differences in shade, and general saturation, the istD
gives you the ability to alter sharpness, contrast, and
color intensity in three steps. Such functionality gives
you a surprising amount of leeway in creating shots
that really satisfy.
Expressive histogram display
With histogram display of color saturation distribution
on the LCD monitor, the istD gives you the necessary
exposure level information to evaluate each shot and
make adjustments where necessary.
22 custom functions that enhance your individuality
At PENTAX, we know photography is all about
individuality. That’s why we made operation
customizable — allowing you to tailor an impressive 22
functions to suit your specific tastes, ranging from the
program line to the steps involved in exposure selection.
Quality that extends from
composition through to playback
Crystal clear display
The istD is equipped with a 1.8-inch, low-temperature,
polysilicon TFT LCD monitor. Featuring approximately
1.18 million pixels, it allows you to check closely for
focusing with confidence. It makes recorded images
easy to see in all kinds of circumstances, and offers
display functions including 1 frame, 9-frame multiple,
zooming to 12X, slide show, and image rotation.
Exclusive PENTAX PHOTO Browser software*1
The istD can be easily connected to a PC via the USB
cable included. The camera is also bundled with
PENTAX PHOTO Browser, which can be found on the
PENTAX Software S-SW10 CD-ROM. Used together,
these allow images to be transferred for greater viewing
ease.

adjust the Av dial at the back. Whichever you choose,
the ist D responds with satisfying speed, and should
you wish to return to the original auto exposure
settings, all you have to do is push the green button.
Hyper Manual for greater control
over manual exposure
Hyper Manual mode assesses the optimum exposure
settings for your subject. You can then shoot with
totally automatic exposure, or press the AE lock button
to maintain that exact exposure automatically while
adjusting aperture or shutter speed as you please. Just
a press of the green button is all it takes to return you to
the default exposure settings.
The accuracy of digital auto bracketing
Exposure really can be a matter of personal taste. For
this reason, the istD offers auto bracketing. Allowing
you to take three shots of the same subject across a
preset range of exposures, it gives you the freedom to
select the one you like best.
Consecutive shots, multiple exposure, and so much more
The ist D offers so much shooting versatility. Selection
of high-speed consecutive shooting allows you to
record up to 6* frames at approximately 2.6 frames per
second. Multiple exposure allows you to take
experimental shots for creative results. There’s also a
self-timer, which offers a 12-second delay in normal
use, a 2-second delay through use of the Custom
Function, and even allows remote operation through
use of an optional unit.
* When the noise reduction function is switched off.
Electronic preview for depth-of-field confirmation
A handy preview lever exclusively developed for the istD
allows you to check depth of focus prior to shooting.
And because the lever is located conveniently close to
the shutter, you’re free to shoot practically as soon as
you achieve the depth you’re looking for.
A superior, specially designed glass pentaprism viewfinder
A key advantage of conventional SLR photography is
the avoidance of parallax error via through-the-lens
viewing. The istD, however, confers the same exact
advantage. Replacing the viewfinders found in film
cameras, it features a glass pentaprism viewfinder
specifically designed to
match the size of its
CCD and offers 0.95X
magnification and an
impressive 95% field of
view.
Built-in and external flash functionality
The ist D comes complete with a built-in flash that
broadens the scope of shooting. Featuring P-TTL
functionality, it pre-discharges to achieve greater
precision and offers a separate pre-discharge for “red-
eye” reduction.* There’s also a range of advanced
features that become available when the built-in flash is
used in combination with the AF360FGZ external auto
flash unit. These comprise quantitative control in
relation to built-in flash discharge, wireless operation,
trailing shutter sync, and high-speed sync.
* This feature does not eliminate “red eyes” in all instances.
Stainless steel chassis for increased rigidity,
minimal weight, and compact dimensions
Employing a chassis that’s only 1-1.2mm thick, the istD
has a truly lightweight design. Yet, thanks to the use of
low-temperature pressurized stainless steel reinforced
through reheating, it retains admirable torsional rigidity.
Additionally the space within the chassis has been used
in the most efficient manner possible, allowing ultra-
compact dimensions to be achieved without a sacrifice
in functionality.
A selection of image formats; a choice of sizes
Because digital photographers make different uses of their shots, the istD offers a choice of image recording qualities
and sizes. In addition to three different JPEG modes, it also offers the choice of non-compressed TIFF format — all of
which are available in small, medium, and large sizes. There’s even the option of RAW format too, which records all the
information available from the CCD.

A choice of power sources
With the istD, you have the freedom to choose the
source of power. Just select whichever you find most
convenient from the two included CR-V3 lithium
batteries, four AA batteries, or an optional AC adapter.
AA Ni-MH batteries can also be used, which can be
conveniently recharged.
A versatile grip that extends shooting life
The D-BG1 grip enhances versatility and
extends operation. Easily attached to the ist D
without removing the camera’s batteries, its
ergonomic design gives you a better grip. It
also houses four AA batteries that supply
additional power and features a shutter
release, Av/Tv dials,
a preview button, and an
AE lock — all ideally located
for vertical compositions.
Exclusive software*2 for RAW data
PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory is included on the istD’s
accompanying CD-ROM. This useful software makes
RAW data exceptionally easy to process and gives you
the freedom not only to specify image format and size,
but also to fine tune white balance, color tone, contrast,
color saturation, sharpness, and color balance.
*1,*2 System requirements
PCs running Windows Me/2000/XP (home and professional editions) with
a Pentium III CPU or higher, over 70MB of available hard disk capacity, and
a standard USB port.
Macintosh machines running Mac OS 9.0 or higher (CarbonLib 1.5 or
later), Mac OS X 10.1.3 or higher with a Power PC G3 CPU or higher, over
70MB of available hard disk capacity, and a standard USB. Compliance
with the aforementioned system requirements does not guarantee all
operations.
An impressive array of
digital shooting modes
A choice of auto, preset,
and manual settings for white balance
With the convenience of automatic white balance, the
istD assures pleasing color recording across a range
of different lighting circumstances. What’s more, it also
offers the ability to preset 8 types of light source, and
manual settings are also available — allowing you to
select the desired color temperature values for each
situation or memorize the color temperature values of
the conditions at hand.
Three-step control over sharpness, contrast, and intensity
In order to produce images that emphasize clarity,
differences in shade, and general saturation, the istD
gives you the ability to alter sharpness, contrast, and
color intensity in three steps. Such functionality gives
you a surprising amount of leeway in creating shots
that really satisfy.
Expressive histogram display
With histogram display of color saturation distribution
on the LCD monitor, the istD gives you the necessary
exposure level information to evaluate each shot and
make adjustments where necessary.
22 custom functions that enhance your individuality
At PENTAX, we know photography is all about
individuality. That’s why we made operation
customizable — allowing you to tailor an impressive 22
functions to suit your specific tastes, ranging from the
program line to the steps involved in exposure selection.
Quality that extends from
composition through to playback
Crystal clear display
The istD is equipped with a 1.8-inch, low-temperature,
polysilicon TFT LCD monitor. Featuring approximately
1.18 million pixels, it allows you to check closely for
focusing with confidence. It makes recorded images
easy to see in all kinds of circumstances, and offers
display functions including 1 frame, 9-frame multiple,
zooming to 12X, slide show, and image rotation.
Exclusive PENTAX PHOTO Browser software*1
The istD can be easily connected to a PC via the USB
cable included. The camera is also bundled with
PENTAX PHOTO Browser, which can be found on the
PENTAX Software S-SW10 CD-ROM. Used together,
these allow images to be transferred for greater viewing
ease.
