In some children who go blind, certain parts of the brain that normally control vision appear
to switch jobs and focus instead on sound, a new study has found.
The study, by researchers at the University of Montreal, involved 7 adults who could see and
12 adults who had lost their vision when they were children. Each participant sat in a room with
16 loudspeakers at different locations. The room was designed so that there were no echoes(回
音). During the experiment, the speakers irregularly produced sounds. Participants had to point
to where the sounds were coming from. Meanwhile, the researchers monitored blood flow in the brains
of the participants to see which brain structures were working during the task.
The results showed that five of the blind participants were very good at pointing to where sounds
were coming from. In these people, blood flow increased in the visual cortex- an area at the back
of the right side of the brain. This part of the brain is usually associated with vision.
The other seven blind participants showed no increase in activity in the visual cortex. These
people didn't do very well at picking out where sounds were coming from. Now, the researchers are
looking at whether these people have gained an enhanced(加强的) sense of touch instead of sound
to replace their lost vision.
The scientists say that their study shows how adaptable(能适应的) parts of the brain can be.
41. The purpose of the experiment described in the passage is to find whether ______.

B. blind people have a better sense of sound

A. to tell the difference between 16 sounds
B. to take down the time each sound lasted
C. to identify the direction the sound came from
D. to detect the number of the loudspeakers.
43. During the experiment, blood flow in the brains of the participants was measured in order to
___.
A. learn about the way they react to echoes
B. look for the way of enhancing hearing ability
C. find which parts of the brain were functioning
D. expose the relationship between seeing and touching
44. Which of the following statements best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
A. Most blind people have a well - developed sense of touch.
B. People go blind because of the breakdown of their visual cortex.
C. Most blind people have a better sense of sound than normal people.
D. Human brains can adjust themselves after the loss of a certain function.

All her life, my mother wanted busy children. It was very important that her house should remain
at all times clean and tidy.
“You could turn your back for a moment in my mother’s house, leave a half-written letter on
the dining room table, a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had
put it back where it belonged,” she explained.
My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother’s house, placed a packet of biscuits on an
end of the table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet
had been removed. Confused(疑惑的), she set down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more
biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. Up to then she had guessed that
everyone in my family held onto their drinks, so as not to make water rings on the end tables. Now
she knows better.
These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all inclined to(有……

was a question frequently asked, but rarely answered.

The Internet has led to a huge increase in credit-cardfraud(信用卡欺诈). Your card information
could even be for sale in an illegal Web site.
Websites offering cheap goods and services should be regarded with care. On-line shoppers who
enter their credit-card information may never receive the goods they thought they bought. The thieves
then go shopping with your card number or sell the information over the Internet.
Computer hackers have broken down safety systems, raising questions about the safety of
cardholder information. Several months ago, 25,000 customers of CD Universe, an on-line music
retailer(零售商), were not lucky. Their names, addresses and credit-card numbers were posted on
a Website after the retailer refused to pay $ 157,828 to get back the information. Credit-card
companies are now fighting against on-line fraud. MasterCard is working on plans for Web-only
credit-card with a lower credit limit. The card could be used only for shopping on-line.
However, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep away from fraud.
Shop only at safe sites: Send your credit-card information only if the Website offers advanced
safe system. If the safety is in place, a letter will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of
your screen. The Website address may also start https://—the extra “s” stands for safe. If in
doubt, give your credit-card information over the telephone.
Keep your password safe: Most on-line sites require a user name and password before placing
an order. Treat your password with care.
49. The underlined phrase “an illegal Web site” in the first paragraph means ________.
A. a Web site against the law
B. a Web sit where one can buy what he/she wants
C. a Web site that sells cheaper goods
D. an unusual Web site from which you can get information you need
50. According to the passage most on-line shoppers worry about _______.
A. too many Web sites for them to choose
B. on-line fraud
C. what they buy is not in good quality
D. the hackers who will steal their money
51. How can the thieves get the information of the credit-card?
A. The customers give them the information.
B. The thieves steal the information on the Internet.
C. The customers sell the information from Web sites.
D. The retailers sell the information to them.
52. You are shopping on the site: http://www.shopping.com, and you want to buy a camera, what should
you do according to the suggestion of this passage?
A. Order the camera on this site.
B. E-mail the site your credit-card information safely.
C. Do not buy the camera on this site.

At present Internet slang, such as “Geili,Fuyun, Hold-steady” has become popular among
teenagers. As for it, our class had a heated discussion.
Some students think Internet slang is ridiculous and rude. In their opinions, it makes no sense
in helping people communicate, in some cases even resulting in misunderstanding. Besides, it is
against the Chinese grammar rules. Overusing it will cause young people to gradually forget our
traditional culture.
However, some other students believe Internet Slang is vivid, fashionable and full of humor
and intelligence. They think it’s of special help in expressing themselves, and making the language
varied.
Personally, I don’t think it good to use this kind of language. It may be cool as some people
think, but you may also get your idea confusing, leaving other people at a loss to your meaning.
