Mr. Harris taught sixth-grade science. On the first day of class, he gave us a
talk about an animal called 'birdcat' , which died out during the Ice Age. He
passed around a skull ( 头 骨 ) as he talked. We all took notes carefully and
later we had a test.
When he returned my paper the next day, there was a big red 'X' through each of
my answers. I had failed! There had to be some mistake! I had written down
exactly (确切地) what Mr Harris said. Then I learned that everyone hi the class
had failed. What had happened?
Very simple, Mr Harris said. He had made up all that 'birdcat'. There had never
been any such animal.
The information in our notes was, therefore, incorrect. Did you think you would
get good marks for incorrect answers?
Needless to say, we felt that was unfair (不公平的). What kind of a test was
this? And what kind of a teacher?
We should havefigured it out, Mr Harris said. After all, at the very moment he
was passing around the 'birdcat' skull, in truth a cat's, hadn't he been
telling us no other findings about this animal except the skull? He had told us
many unbelievable things about the animal, such as the size, the colour, the
strength. . . , but none of us had questioned.
Mr Harris said he hoped we would learn something from this lesson. Teachers and
textbooks are not always correct. In fact no one is. He told us not to let our
minds go to sleep, and to speak up if we ever thought he or the textbook was
wrong.
Up to now I haven't made any great scientific discoveries, but Mr Harris's
class gave me and my classmates something just as important; To look people in
the eye and tell them they are wrong.

the time! Later it was found that Turk was not real. Inside the box machine was
a chess player.
John McCarthy (1927— ) is thought as the ‘Father' of A. I. He invented the

People like reading newspapers every day. Newspapers tell us about all kinds of
news in our home town, in our country, and in other parts of the world. Today
we can read about important things that took place in foreign countries on the
same day they happened, even in countries far, far away.
But hundreds of years ago, news of such things took months or even years to
travel from one country to another. In those times, news was often passed from
one person to another and was never completely true.
Newspapers today bring us with much more than just what happened at home and in
foreign countries. If we want to know what the weather will be like, we can
read the weather reports. If we want to find out what films are being shown, or
what plays or concerts we can go to, we can look in the newspapers.
In many countries notices (告示) or ads (广告) are put in newspapers. People
who want to get jobs, to buy houses or cars. . . , or even to look for a
missing person, would look in the newspapers. And what's more, some people read
newspapers only to kill time!
