The Ofﬁ cial Guide to the TOEFL® Test Installing the eBook The test questions in the Ofﬁ cial Guide to the TOEFL® Test are from actual TOEFL iBT® tests. However, the screen and delivery formats are not identical to the actual test. When you take the actual test, you may notice some variations in how the questions are presented to you on screen. Downloading the Practice Tests When you purchase the eBook, you will receive 3 links. The ﬁ rst link allows you to download the PDF ﬁ le of the eBook itself. The other 2 links contain the practice tests and the numbered audio tracks. If you are using a PC, use the ﬁ le named TOEFL_PC.exe. You will be guided through a short series of screens, and at the end of the process, the program will be installed on your computer. If you are using a Mac®, use the ﬁ le named TOEFL_Mac.dmg. For both PCs and Macs, an icon labeled “TOEFL” will appear on your desktop. Click on that icon to start the practice test program. Main Menu When you launch the practice test program, this screen appears: Your choice will depend on how you prefer to prac- tice for the TOEFL iBT test. b If you want to take full-length authentic TOEFL iBT practice tests on your computer, choose a test from the Main Menu. b If you only want to listen to the audio tracks, click on Audio Tracks. Taking TOEFL iBT Practice Tests on Your Computer On the Main Menu, choose Practice Test 1, 2, or 3. Then click on the test section you wish to take: Reading, Listening, Speaking, or Writing. Note that you can take each section more than once. When you open a test section, you will ﬁ rst see the instructions for that section. A timer visible on the screen shows how many minutes and seconds you have left for that section. You can hide the timer if you ﬁ nd it distracting. If you must take a break during the test, click on the Menu button at the bottom and then select Back to Main Menu. Your work will not be lost, and when you resume, you will take up exactly where you left off. The timer clock will stop while you are on your break and will restart immediately when you resume the test. Answering Questions To answer the questions in the Reading and Listening sections, click on the corresponding answer oval or follow the instructions given. For some questions, you will need to click on more than one answer choice. Once you select an answer(s), the Next button is enabled. Click on it to move forward to the next question. For the Reading, section you can move back to review your answer choice by clicking on the Previous button. For the Speaking section, you should record your response to each question into your recording de- vice after you hear the instruction telling you to begin speaking. Stop recording once the response time expires. For the Writing section, write your response to each question in the space provided in the time allowed. When all the questions in the section have been answered, click on the Next button to complete the section. Playing Audio Tracks In the Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections, you will listen to audio tracks. Audio controls are avail- able at the bottom of the screen. At the end of the track, click on Next to start answering questions. Your Performance On the Main Menu, click on a section of any test you have taken. You will get information on when you completed the section and your score for the Reading and Listening sections only. Select Review Section. For each question in the Reading and Listening sections, you will see the correct answer and an expla- nation of why that is the correct answer. For the Speaking section, you will see the important points for each question, sample responses, and rater comments on the responses. Follow the instructions for listening to the sample responses. Use the important points, sample responses, and rater comments to evaluate your performance on the Speaking section. For the Writing section, you will see the topic notes, sample essays, and rater comments on the essays. Use the topic notes, sample essays, and rate com- ments to evaluate your performance on the Writing section. Working Through the Practice Sets and Practice Tests in the Book On the Main Menu, click on Audio Tracks. You will see a window on which you can select the audio Practice Set tracks or the Practice Test tracks. As you work through the Practice Sets and Practice Tests in the book, you will be told when to play each audio track.
