For over 100 years, it is convenient for people to go
from one place to another by taxi. But sometimes there are
no taxis coming to the place you are waiting. However, this
has become a thing of the past since Uber app appears.
What is Uber
Uber is an American company that provides a taxi
service through an app on the smart phone. It was set up
in March, 2009 and has grown quickly. An app, in fact, is
a computer program working on smart phones, computers and
other communication devices (设备). By using your smart
phone, you can easily and quickly order a taxi that takes
you to the place you want to go.
Uber app makes you feel good
The nicest thing about Uber app is that you can see where your taxi is or how
long it will take to reach you on your smart phone screen. And you can also find
the telephone number of the driver in Uber app,so you can call or send messages
to the driver when you are waiting.

Uber is always there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you want to go somewhere,
you can easily open Ubcr app at home or anywhere in the open air, then it connects
you to the nearest driver.
Usually it takes only between 5 and 15 minutes to get a Uber taxi by using Uber
app.
The advantages of Uber
Uber is popular because it is simple and very user-friendly. You have nothing
to do with a taxi company. If you are not pleased with the ride and the driver, you
can give the driver a low score through Ubcr app, so Uber taxi drivers usually serve
well. Generally speaking, Uber is simple, time-saving, and above all very easy.
The cost of a Uber taxi

depends on the country and the city that you are in. It is sure that Uber taxis are
much cheaper than the taxis you used to take.

Laurence Kim Peek was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on November 11, 1951. It
was clear from an early age that he was not like other children. A medical scan (扫
描)showed that the two halves of his brain were not connected in the usual way.
As a result, Laurence developed an amazing memory. He started to read when he was
two. He used to read books and put them back on the shelf upside down to show that
he had finished them. He remembered everything he had read.
He memorized quite a lot of information on subjects such as history, geography,
sports, music and literature. He also had an unbelievable ability with numbers and
dates.
To read more quickly, he read the left page with his left eye and the right page
with his right eye. By reading the two pages at the same time, it took him less than
an hour to read a whole book. By the age of 30,he had memorized around 12,000 books.
However, he did not develop so well in other areas. He could not walk until he
was four, and he had problems putting on his clothes and shoes. His social skills
were poor, and he was extremely sensitive (敏感的) about meeting new people. In
1984, Peek and his father met Hollywood movie writer Barry Morrow. Morrow was
fascinated by Peek and began to write a new play about Peek’s experiences. The result
was RainMan,a movie that won an Oscar for Best Picture in 1988. This changed Peek’s
life. He got used to being the center of attention. He became more self-confident
(自信的). He appeared on TV and traveled around the country with his father to develop
awareness (意识) of his condition. Sadly, Peek died of a heart attack in 2009.
38. The writer tells us Peek was a man with_________ in the first three paragraphs.
A. a weak ability
C. a great dream
B. an amazing memory
D. a common brain
39. The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refers to “_____________”.
A. he couldn’t walk until four

Picture
40. It can be learnt from the passage that ___________.

D. Peek never felt comfortable with his fame
41. The best title of this passage is most probably____________.
A. The real “Rain Man”

What is the difference between a fear (害怕)and a phobia? You might have a fear
of dogs if you have ever been bitten by one. However, if you avoid walking down streets
where you think there might be a dog,you may have a phobia, which is a strong unnatural
fear. If the fear has started to change a person's life,he or she probably has a
phobia. Different surveys say that between 10 and 80 percent of us have at least
one phobia.
You can probably guess what some of the most “popular” phobias are. Flying
may be the safest way to travel, but many people are scared of doing it. Fear of
heights is also very common. For example, Spider-Man actor Tobey Maquire can’t
stand high places. However, Tobey is not afraid of spiders that most people are afraid
of. Rupert Grint, who plays in the HarryPottermovies, is in fear of spiders. “ In
one scene of the movie, we come into the large spider's hole, and there we meet a
spider that is the size of an elephant and really scary because he has these hairs.
I'm really scared of spiders.” he said.
▲ . For example, cats are very cute for most of us, but not for such powerful
people in history as Alexander the Great and Napolean Bonaparte. Actor Nicole Kidman
says, “ I’m not scared of snakes or spiders, but I’m scared of butterflies.
Sometimes when I came home from school, the biggest butterfly you had ever seen would
be just sitting on our front gate. I would climb over the fence, move slowly to the
side of the house,or do anything to avoid having to go through the front gate.
“ Clowns (小丑)are not so funny for actor Johnny Depp, whose childhood memory of
the “ painted faces and fake smiles” still makes him scared. Some other weird (怪
诞的)phobias, including chewing gum, old doors or windows and footsteps, also fear
some famous persons, such as Orah Winfred, Billy Boband Sigmund Fred.
42. Rupert Grint who acted in Harry Potter is scared of___________.
A. dogs
B. snakes
C. spiders
D. butterflies
