Tastebuds (or Papillae) were first described by Italian Physiologist Marcello
Malpighi in the late 1600's. Malpighi is considered to be the founder of the fields
of histology and anatomic microscopy, as he was one of the first people to carefully
examine the tissues of plants and animals using a microscope. In addition to first
describing papillae, Malpighi was the first person to see red blood cells, and he
was the first person to actually see the small blood vessels connecting arteries
and veins, verifying the theory of blood circulation proposed by William Harvey.
Malpighi named these vessels capillaries. Any time you come across something
described as Malpighian (for example the Malpighian Tubules of insects, or
Malpighian Tufts in the kidney), it was first described by Marcello Malpighi.
The average person has about 10,000 taste buds and they're replaced every 2 weeks
or so. But as a person ages, some of those taste cells don't get replaced. An older
person may only have 5,000 working taste buds. That's why certain foods may taste
stronger to you than they do to adults. Smoking also can reduce the number of taste
buds a person has.
But before you give taste buds all the credit for your favorite flavors, it's
important to thank your nose. Olfactory (say: ahl-FAK-tuh-ree) receptors inside the
uppermost part of the nose contain special cells that help you smell. They send
messages to the brain.
Here's how it works: While you're chewing, the food releases chemicals that
immediately travel up into your nose. These chemicals trigger the olfactory
receptors inside the nose. They work together with your taste buds to create the
true flavor of that yummy slice of pizza by telling the brain all about it!
When you have a cold or allergies, and your nose is stuffy, you might notice that
your food doesn't seem to have much flavor. That's because the upper part of your
nose isn't clear to receive the chemicals that trigger the olfactory receptors (that
inform the brain and create the sensation of flavor).
Try holding your nose the next time you eat something. You'll notice that your taste
buds are able to tell your brain something about what you're eating
— that it's sweet, for instance — but you won't be able to pick the exact flavor
until you let go of your nose.
So the next time you chomp on an apple or slurp up some soup, thank your tongue —
and your nose! Without them, life wouldn't have any flavor.

Traveling
1. Do you like travelling?
Yes, I like travelling very much. I always pick up a place to travel with my
parents during the winter and summer vacation. I love the feeling to acknowledge
the customs, people and delicious food of a new place. Besides, it is also a good
opportunity to accompany my parents.
2. What ways of transportation do you often use when travelling?
I often use train as the prior way of transportation when traveling. When I’
m on a train, I can view the scenery of cities and villages alongside the rail.
Sometimes people who take the same train with me will tell me some interesting
anecdotes, which adds a lot of fun to this trip.
3. What kind of places do you like to travel to?
I like to travel to some places unknown to the public where few visitors come.
In these places, I don’t need to worry about the situation where a scenery full
of people would destroy my mood of traveling. Meanwhile, there are few artificial
landscape in these places which allows me to be embraced by real nature.

2.Do you like to exercise in public places, such as parks?
3.What measures should governments and individuals take to keep public places
clean?
4.How to keep a balance between public places and private houses?
解析
题目要求考生描述一个“需要改进的公共场所”。作答要点包括:场所的地点;场所的现
状;为什么需要改进;如何改进。
范文
The public place that I think need improvements is the community library near
my home. I often go there after work, probably twice a week.
Speaking of what it is like, I have to first admit that, there actually are
several aspects I like about this library. The first thing I appreciate about it,
is its whole atmosphere. Every time I walk into the library, I can see people at
all ages reading books, watching movies, surfing the Internet, and discussing warmly
about some questions, which makes me feel really peaceful after a tiring day of work.
The second thing that I like about it, is its large collection of books. It not only
has a huge number of books written in Chinese, but also a lot of books printed in
English, German and other foreign languages.
Despite all those things I love about this library, I do feel that certain changes
should be made to make it an even better place for people to read and relax. The
biggest problem I feel necessary for the library to tackle, is that there are no
quiet study rooms provided. In other words, people in this library are allowed to
talk to each other wherever they want to, which in a way, may cause huge inconvenience
for those who want to study or read in a quiet environment. To be frank, this has
been troubling me for quite a while. I remember there was a time when I went to the
library, trying to find a quiet corner so that I can then take my time to appreciate
one of my favorite books, On the Road, but sadly wasn’t able to do it thanks to
consistent talking around me. It was this experience that struck me that the library
might have to consider setting up a study room, where people can read and think
peacefully with no disturbance. In addition, I have also noticed that the chairs
provided by the library may not be enough, especially on weekends when people start
to swarm in from the beginning of the day.
Well, in order to deal with these two problems, I think the library should set
up some study rooms, and equip this place with more chairs as soon as possible.

8 月 11 日雅思口语真题回忆:
1.Plant
1.Do you keep plants at home?
I keep a few around, mostly in the form of potted plants that are easy to care
for and don’t need a lot of attention. I have a little ball cactus for example,
and a few pots of succulent. They add a bit of greenery to the room, and aren't liable
to dying if I forget to water them once or twice. Plus, there's no need for special
fertilizer either, they seem happy enough just in normal dirt.
2. What plant did you grow when you were young?
When I was a kid, I do distinctly remember my parents putting me in charge
of well-being of one of our plants. It was intended as a lesson in responsibility,
and for me to see the results of effort and consequences of neglect. I don’t know
specifically what kind of plant it was, but it was big and leafy, and didn't flower.
I did take good care of it though, it certainly didn't die on my watch.
3. Do you know anything about growing a plant?
Not much, to be honest. Other than the necessary watering schedule for a
particular type of plant that I’m keeping, I'm afraid my flora knowledge is very
limited. Even when it comes to the cactus and succulent I keep, I don't really know
how much sunlight they prefer or their flowering cycle.
4. Do Chinese people send plants as gifts?
Not as far as I'm aware, it's not really a tradition. I have heard of friends
gifting each other selections from their own gardens, but that's mostly a middle-aged
or elderly kind of thing. People my age generally aren’t into gardening or keeping
plants in general, we tend to prefer pets you see, so gifts of plants would be wasted.
